Early Settlement and Naming
The area was first settled around 1877, characterized by dense vegetation including swamps, vines, and pine groves along the Hillsboro River. By 1890, a small settlement named Hillsborough emerged along the river. As deer were frequently seen grazing along the river, the town was renamed “Deerfield” in 1898 to reflect this natural feature.
Agricultural Roots and Development
In its early years, Deerfield’s economy was primarily based on agriculture. Settlers cultivated pineapples, tomatoes, green beans, and squash, while fishing along the Intracoastal Waterway also played a significant role. The arrival of the Florida East Coast Railway in the early 20th century facilitated the transport of these goods, contributing to the community’s growth.
Incorporation and Growth
Deerfield was officially incorporated as a town on June 11, 1925, with George Emory Butler Jr. serving as its first mayor. To highlight its coastal location and attract tourists, the town’s name was changed to “Deerfield Beach” in 1939. The community continued to develop, and by June 13, 1945, it was incorporated as a city.
Modern Era
Today, Deerfield Beach is known for its beautiful coastline, the International Fishing Pier, and a variety of cultural and recreational activities. The city has evolved into a vibrant community that honors its rich history while embracing modern development.
